| John 'Mick' Ter Haar - Sommelier
My passion for wine did not develop until I was in my mid-twenties. I was making my way through college and working late night shifts at a local restaurant where I was exposed to fine wine and gourmet cuisine. I am fortunate to have worked with some of the most renowned chefs in Colorado who have taught me the art of food and wine pairing. It was at this time that I was inspired to take my passion to the next level and earn my Sommelier Certificate. My career has allowed me to travel extensively throughout the wine regions of the Pacific Coast. I have been fortunate to develop lasting relationships with proprietors of wineries, winemakers and wine brokers and distributors during my visits to Napa Valley and Sonoma County. I take wine seriously, but not too seriously. After all it's just grape juice; really yummy grape juice! I truly enjoy indulging in the bouquet of aromas in every glass. When sipping wine, I like to imagine the vineyards where the grapes grew, the rolling hills and meadows and the local cuisine that will pair best with that bottle. My life as an artist began in a small charming city hundreds of miles away from this land, in my native town of Varna, Bulgaria. I didn't always know I would be an artist. Like most kids, I liked to draw and paint. I have always had a passion for creating things with my hands, which led me to the Art School of Varna where I received my formal art education. Later on I discovered a great way to express my emotions by recreating the beauty around us with gems, wire and colorful beads. Color and the way it affects us is my passion. The changing light of day and the moods it creates are the foundations of my creations. My jewelry pieces usually start with a color idea and then evolve into compositions in which color and form harmonize. My designs incorporate sterling silver wire and chain with Swarovski crystal beads and semi-precious gemstones such as amber, garnet, labradorite and fresh water pearls. I prefer to work with wire which allows me to craft every little detail of the piece and create an elegant and sophisticated look. Serenity and simplicity are my primary goals. | Our Story
It is amazing how the lives of two people can cross in time and two passions can blend into a perfect harmony. We feel so blessed to have found our passions and so privileged for the opportunity to share them with you. The idea of Cork and Canvas was developed over the course of the past year and a half with the desire to bring to Highland Park a custom Wine Shop and Art Gallery. We are amazed by the amount of support we have received from the Highland Park community and looking forward to servicing it's residents' wine needs and support the local artist and jewelry artisans! Cork and Canvas, Wine and Art Gallery is the fruit of our individual dreams. It is oriented towards those who, just like us, enjoy fine wine and art. We would not have done it with out the love and support of our families and close friends. This is the place where we would like to thank them all for encouraging us to pursue our dreams! |
